After they read the opinion article, Aoi explains reuse
and recycling in Japan to Eric.
I think Japan is still a country of mottainai. It is true
that some people throw away usable things, but others try
to reuse or recycle them.
How do they reuse items? Some of my friends buy
and sell used books and clothes on the Internet. Also,
some apparel makers collect used clothes and send them
to refugee camps across the world. Reusing something, I
always feel the spirit of mottainai.
As well as reusing some items, we try to recycle
others. Many cities and towns have strict rules for
separating garbage. Used plastic bottles, for example, are
made into various new goods.
These days, moreover, I hear a different kind of
recycling has become popular. It is called upcycling.
